Council Tax Energy Rebate

On the 3 February 2022, the Chancellor announced that Council Tax payers who live in a band A to D property will receive a one-off payment of £150. The payment is to support households with rising energy costs. The rebate is not part of your Council Tax and will not appear on your bill.

Please do not email or phone us about the £150 Council Tax Energy Rebate. The only information we can provide is detailed below. Your enquiry will prevent us providing other services and making arrangements to deliver the rebate. This page will be updated regularly as more information becomes available.

Who is eligible?

The Council Tax payer on 1 April 2022 for a property which is in Council Tax Bands A - D.

Only one payment will be made to a household.

The other main criteria are:

  • The property is someone's sole or main residence
  • The property is not unoccupied, exempt from Council Tax or a second home. Some limited households with exemptions will still qualify such as:
    • Those occupied by students
    • Severely mentally impaired
    • Occupied solely by under 18 year olds
    • Annexes occupied by a dependant relative

The rebate will not be applicable where the person who is liable to pay the Council Tax is:

  • A local authority
  • A corporate body or
  • Another body such as a housing association, the government or governmental body.

What if I don't pay Council Tax because I receive full Local Council Tax Support?

You will receive the £150 Energy Rebate if you qualify under the rules summarised above.

When will payment be made if i live in a Band A-D house?

Payments will be made between May 2022 and 30 September 2022.

How to Apply

If you live in a band A-D and have not yet received your payment, please complete the below application form

Please be advised due to the additional checks we are required to carry out by the government before making payments, there will be a delay between you completing the application form and receiving your Energy Rebate Payment.

Once you have successfully submitted your application please do not contact us to chase you application, as this will cause further delays to applications being processed.

We are prioritising the payment to your nominated accounts and it is likely that you will receive your payment ahead of any payment advice, so please ensure you check your account directly for payment.

What if I live in a band E to H house?

The government have provided us with limited funds to make some discretionary payments to households in bands E to H and on a low income. Due to the limited nature of the funding, all applications will be dealt with on a first come, first service basis.

To qualify for an award you must meet the qualifying criteria;

  • You must occupy a property in Council Tax Bands E-H
  • You must occupy the property as your ‘sole or main residence’.
  • The applicant or their partner must be liable to pay the utility bills e.g., electricity, gas, water for the property they are living in on 01/04/2022; and
  • The household has savings of less than £3,000 on 01/04/2022; and
  • There has not already been a Council Tax Energy Rebate Payment or Discretionary award made for this household.

In addition one of the following criteria must also be met;

  • The applicant or their partner is in receipt of any of the following benefits on 01/04/2022:
  • Universal Credit
  • Housing Benefit
  • Employment Support Allowance
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Disability Living Allowance
  • Job Seekers Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Child Tax Credit (where this is not paid as part of Universal Credit)
  • Working Tax Credit (where this is not paid as part of Universal Credit)
  • Pension Credit

Or on you council Tax Account you have been awarded one of the following discounts or exemptions;

  • Council Tax Income Discount
  • Care Leavers Discount
  • Carer discount
  • Disabled Band Reduction
  • Severe Mental Impairment Discount

Only one Discretionary award will be made per household

A Discretionary award will not be applicable where the person who is liable to pay the Council Tax is:

  • A local authority
  • A corporate body or
  • Another body such as a housing association, the government or governmental body.
